Rylstone & Kandos

In Rylstone and Kandos you can experience exceptionally good modern food & coffee in local cafes or stroll the uncrowded main street and just enjoy the company of the locals who pride themselves on their old fashioned friendliness. With historic stone buildings and wide tree lined streets, Rylstone is a special town that you will need to experience for yourself.

There is just a short 7 kilometre drive between Rylstone and Kandos. This cement mining town is set against a stunning backdrop of the Cumber Melon Mountain (Mt. Baldy), and originally known as Cumber Melon, this small township boasts an industrial past of which residents are justly proud. Coal, limestone and shale were all discovered in the late 1800s, cement has been mined in Kandos since 1915. Now Kandos provides a unique shopping experience for visitors – with a milner and timber furniture artist just to get you started.

The nearby Capertee Valley is the largest enclosed valley in Australia, and is home to a large variety of bird species. There are walking and four-wheel-driving trails, historic shale mines and the Glow Worm Tunnel.

Other natural sights to explore in the Rylstone / Kandos area include Dunns Swamp in the Wollemi National Park, a stunning waterway which has a camping site and is surrounded by walking trails; as well as Ferntree Gully, a rainforest area with walking tracks going down into the cool narrow ferntree-studded valley floor, as well as around the top edge of the rocks, where walkers can get an overview of the valley and the unusual rock formations on either side.
