In the heart of Mudgee’s Perry Street precinct lies the quirky Byron Perry café. Here, you can lock lips with artisanal gelato, taste locally sourced lamb burgers and find gluten-free dishes with ease.

Whether you’re swinging by Mudgee on a road trip to Gulgong, looking for a favourite local haunt, or seeking something a little out of the ordinary for your weekend away, Byron Perry is exactly the kind of coffee shop we love. Sure, the brews are outstanding. But you can find great coffee in the city. What’s harder to find? Mudgee’s countryside character, a good dose of humour and dishes made with the region’s freshest ingredients. From gelato churned on-site to lamb burgers that may just redefine your idea of a good brunch, this café has a knack for surprises – and winning you over.

The legend of Byron Perry

Byron Perry is a dose of mythology, a splash of humour, and a tip of the hat to Mudgee’s pioneers. The “official” backstory tells of Byron Perry, a hopeful dreamer and accidental innovator who arrived in Mudgee during the country’s boom of coal. He didn’t find Mudgee’s black rock, but his penchant for hospitality and culinary experimentation with the region’s local produce left a legacy that the café’s owners honour today. “We love what we do, and we love doing it in Mudgee,” says the owner. And that love shines through the hyper-local menu.

More than just a meal

Byron Perry’s commitment to Mudgee’s local ingredients is no gimmick. Every dish celebrates the region’s best: wagyu and lamb from Gooree Park, feta from High Valley Cheese, chocolate from Spencer Cocoa, Butterscotch Schnapps from Baker Williams Distillery and local oranges that make their sorbet sing. And let’s not gloss over the gelato, made fresh by a certified Level 2 Gelatiere.

At the 2024 DIAA NSW Dairy Awards, Byron Perry’s gelato scooped up four gold awards (for Spencer Chocolate, Pistachio, English Lavender, and Sticky Chai), two silver awards (Five Senses Coffee and Baker Williams Butterscotch Schnapps), and a collection of Champion Trophies, including Champion Ice Cream, Champion Frozen Dairy Confection, and Most Consistent Exhibitor.

What’s more, the menu is abundant with gluten-free options. “We’re the only café outside Sydney with Coeliac Australia accreditation,” owner, Glenn notes. A badge of honour that took over nine months of rigorous assessment to earn.

A café with soul

Certain things can’t be replicated, and Byron Perry’s warming, quirky atmosphere is one of them. Take a seat at one of the large communal tables, or people watch on the sprawling pet-friendly front deck. Don’t forget to let your eyes wander to the cheeky humorous signs scattered across the venue.

This isn’t a café rushing to turn tables. It’s a place to slow down, savour the moment, and feel genuinely welcomed. “With the rise of QR codes and transactional dining, we wanted to bring the hospitality back into hospitality,” Glenn explains. Mission accomplished.
