The Journey: “From Stockbroker to Scrappy”

In the summer of 2009, the Faulkner family took a significant leap, trading the bustling life of Sydney’s Northern Beaches for the serene landscapes of Mudgee. Stuart, co-owner and Ideas Man shifted from a 15-year finance career to purchasing the local Mudgee scrap yard – a journey humorously dubbed ‘From Stockbroker to Scrappy’ by the family. In 2010, the family bought a Fosters Brewing Company Vineyard, which they named ‘Peppertree Hill,’ after the grand leafy sculptures adorning the driveway. Preferring wine consumption over production, they swapped vines for bovines.

The following year, a need to host visiting friends and family led to renovating The Woolshed, an authentic shearing shed. Initially for personal use, it soon became apparent that its rustic charm was perfect for guest accommodation, marking the start of sharing their sanctuary with others. A few years and twelve self-contained properties later, the Peppertree Collection was born.

Peppertree Farm

The Farm Peppertree Collection

Best for: Nature lovers

Nestled in the foothills of the undulating Cudgegong Ranges, just a 3.5-hour drive from Sydney, Peppertree Farm offers a serene retreat in the heart of Mudgee’s wine region. This natural haven features twelve self-contained modern cottages, each designed to provide seclusion, encourage slow living, and offer a chance to disconnect from the everyday hustle and reconnect with one another. With expansive views across the farm’s fields – often shimmering in the morning and afternoon sunlight – each cottage is carefully curated to reflect the character and warmth of its rural setting, leaving guests feeling rejuvenated and restored.

“It is where you will find room to breathe”, says owner Kirsti Faulkner. “It’s like arriving at your own country house with the feeling of being miles from anywhere but with everything Mudgee has to offer at your fingertips”.

Added to the collection to offer a homely touch in Mudgee’s CBD, The Terraces embody the Heritage-style, 19th-century architecture that defines much of the Mudgee Region and its surrounding towns and villages. The building’s traditional red brick exterior is complemented by elegant white French doors and intricate iron lacework. Inside, enjoy a fully-equipped kitchen and generous living spaces beneath lofty, ornate ceilings. With one- and two-bedroom apartments, The Terraces provide the perfect nest for families or couples seeking a comfortable and cosy stay within walking distance from Mudgee’s town centre.

Situated on the edge of Mudgee’s town centre, this spacious property provides the best of both worlds, with the region’s outdoor experiences, wineries, and exceptional restaurants at arms reach. But with ample outdoor space and comfortable living areas, there’s no need to leave the peaceful retreat of The Laneway.

Perfectly situated just around the corner from Mudgee’s lively local watering holes, restaurants, and shops, this property is primed for groups of friends ready to experience a true taste of Mudgee or long-term visitors seeking space and home comforts. Make the most of the large indoor entertaining spaces and on a summer’s evening, you’ll find the outdoor BBQ has your name on it.

“It’s all about the little things at Peppertree. We’re always looking for new ways to surprise and delight our visitors”, says Kirsti.
