Sydney Weekender in the Mudgee Region

On Sunday 19 February 2017, Sydney Weekender’s special NSW Tourism Award winners episode aired on the Seven Network.

Watch the episode here

Following Mudgee Region Tourism’s win at the NSW Tourism Awards for best in Destination Marketing, Mike and the Sydney Weekender team were compelled to take the short 3.5 hour drive to reset their senses + visit a number of Mudgee Region gems including highlights from Mudgee Fine Food’s new Farm Gate Trail, a taste of the famous woodfired pizzas and wine at Di Lusso Estate, a closer look at bee hives at Mudgee Honey Haven and a walk through the flowering olive grove at Rylstone Olive Press.

Here's a behind the scenes sneak peek at what Mike Whitney + The Sydney Weekender crew explored. But first, a brief introduction to Mudgee's Farm Gate Trail, around which their itinerary was planned.

Mudgee Farm Gate Trail

Meet the farmers, taste the food and take a piece of the Mudgee Region home with you.  The Mudgee Farm Gate Trail is one of the region's latest tourist attractions.

Mudgee Farm Gate Trail

With its pristine surrounds, clean, crisp air and fertile soils, the beautiful Mudgee Region is the perfect environment for growing premium produce.  Whether you're a local or a visitor seeking to treat yourself to fresh produce direct from the farmer, the Mudgee Farm Gate Trail will lead you there.

Hop from gate to gate and let the seasons inspire your taste buds as you enjoy some of the region's produce at your own leisurely pace. Download the trail map here + see what it is that inspired Sydney Weekender to pop a trip to the Mudgee Region in their diary.

 Mudgee Honey Haven

Sydney Weekender's first stop was made at Mudgee Honey Haven. Mike + his team enjoyed their first taste of the Mudgee Farm Gate Trail here. While Mudgee is known for its beautiful wine, the region is also famous for its delicious honey.

Honey Haven

Seasonal and varietal honey is sourced from bees taking pollen from a single type of flower, whether it's yellow box, iron gum or stringy bark.   A local feel keeps the honey as close to the region as seasonality allows with the majority of the honey being produced from local areas.

All-in-all, a fascinating start to the trip for Sydney Weekender.

Di Lusso Estate

The next stop along Mudgee's Farm Gate Trail for the Sydney Weekender team was Di Lusso Estate. Mike + his crew spent a relaxing lunch beneath the vines here followed by a winetasting with the owner, Robert.

Di Lusso EstateCucina di Lusso is open from Friday to Sunday each week, serving wood fired pizzas and regional Mediterranean favourites.

A round of bocce and a bottle of wine with lunch overlooking Lago di Lusso is a great way to spend the weekend.

Horizon Mudgee

With the day coming to an end, the Sydney Weekender crew retreated to Horizon Mudgee to have a dip in the pool, soak up a spectacular Mudgee Region sunset + rest their heads for the night.
Horizon Mudgee

Horizon Mudgee is a sleek, contemporary home surrounded by undulating hills upholstered with vineyards and pastures conveniently located on the outskirts of Mudgee. Boasting 360 degree views up and down the river valley, Horizon has been intelligently engineered to enhance your sense of space + light and is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Rylstone Olive Press

The last stop on Sydney Weekender's tour of the Mudgee Region was the Rylstone Olive Press. Here they meandered through the flowering olive grove, explored the impressive olive press and sampled their award-winning olive oil.
Rylstone Olive Press

Located on the Lue Road, the olives here at Rylstone Olive Press are pressed within 6 hours of picking to create oils with depth, harmony and balance of fruit + flavour. With guided tours + tastings on offer, this Farm Gate Trail favourite is well worth a visit.
Sydney Weekender

After exploring Rylstone Olive Press the team at Sydney Weekender were treated to an olive-oil inspired lunch + ice-cream dessert prepared especially for the occasion, by local favourite Rachael McCarthy Catering. The Sydney Weekender team then set-off back to Sydney with full tummies + a bottle of globally acclaimed olive oil each to share with their loved ones.
