Sydney Weekender in the Mudgee Region
On Sunday 19 February 2017, Sydney Weekender’s special NSW Tourism Award winners episode aired on the Seven Network.
Following Mudgee Region Tourism’s win at the NSW Tourism Awards for best in Destination Marketing, Mike and the Sydney Weekender team were compelled to take the short 3.5 hour drive to reset their senses + visit a number of Mudgee Region gems including highlights from Mudgee Fine Food’s new Farm Gate Trail, a taste of the famous woodfired pizzas and wine at Di Lusso Estate, a closer look at bee hives at Mudgee Honey Haven and a walk through the flowering olive grove at Rylstone Olive Press.
Here's a behind the scenes sneak peek at what Mike Whitney + The Sydney Weekender crew explored. But first, a brief introduction to Mudgee's Farm Gate Trail, around which their itinerary was planned.
Mudgee Farm Gate Trail
Meet the farmers, taste the food and take a piece of the Mudgee Region home with you. The Mudgee Farm Gate Trail is one of the region's latest tourist attractions.
Mudgee Honey Haven
Sydney Weekender's first stop was made at Mudgee Honey Haven. Mike + his team enjoyed their first taste of the Mudgee Farm Gate Trail here. While Mudgee is known for its beautiful wine, the region is also famous for its delicious honey.
Seasonal and varietal honey is sourced from bees taking pollen from a single type of flower, whether it's yellow box, iron gum or stringy bark. A local feel keeps the honey as close to the region as seasonality allows with the majority of the honey being produced from local areas.
All-in-all, a fascinating start to the trip for Sydney Weekender.
Di Lusso Estate
The next stop along Mudgee's Farm Gate Trail for the Sydney Weekender team was Di Lusso Estate. Mike + his crew spent a relaxing lunch beneath the vines here followed by a winetasting with the owner, Robert.
Cucina di Lusso is open from Friday to Sunday each week, serving wood fired pizzas and regional Mediterranean favourites.
A round of bocce and a bottle of wine with lunch overlooking Lago di Lusso is a great way to spend the weekend.
Rylstone Olive Press
And that's a wrap...
A big thanks to the incredible Mudgee Region producers + everyone involved in making these few days with Sydney Wekeender such a treat. This includes the gang at Mudgee Fine Foods, Mudgee Honey Haven, Di Lusso Estate, Horizon Mudgee, Rylstone Olive Press + Rachel McCarthy Catering.
