Printmaking Workshop @ Rosby Wines
Solar Plate Etching + Viscosity Colour Printing

TUTOR: Seraphina Martin

Learn how to create a stunning portfolio of vibrant colour solar plate etchings. A variety of techniques will be employed to guide you through the contemporary printmaking process. You’ll leave feeling confident in your ability to transform any drawing, painting or photo into a fine art print sure to make any wall pop.Using a more contemporary (quicker, simpler and safer/non-toxic) approach to etching, this two-day class will leave you feeling inspired and able to etch to plate, with remarkable results. Using the sun and water instead of acids and solvents, A variety of techniques will be employed to guide you through the printmaking process, including lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises.

The workshop has been carefully curated to ensure the experience is a truly unique and immersive one, one that challenges convention and leaves you feeling inspired to push yourself creatively. Suitable for beginners and experienced printmaker

This workshop offers the ultimate art and wine experience, coinciding with Mudgee’s post-harvest early autumnal beauty. Rosby aspires to offer you a truly holistic experience by building a range of other cultural delights into the workshop. This includes paddock-to-plate style dining set against a romantic and utterly breathtaking backdrop. You’ll feel very much at one with nature in Rosby’s gorgeously rustic homestead grounds. You’ll also be treated to an exclusive wine tasting with the vigneron followed by a walking tour of the picturesque vineyard. Accommodation in Rosby’s charming hilltop guesthouse is an optional addition well worth looking into and will certainly complete this refined country escape. 


About the Tutor: 

Seraphina Martin was carefully handpicked by the team at Rosby. She is a highly experienced and accomplished printmaker, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and an exceptional learning environment. Her passion for the arts is contagious and her determination to impart knowledge in an engaging, fun, interactive and supportive setting sets her apart.

Seraphina Martin studied printmaking at the National Art School in Paris before moving to Sydney 30 years ago to teach at the Sydney University Art Workshop. She was the recipient of the Moya Dyring Studio at the Cite des Arts in Paris in 1988. During her residency, she studied the Viscosity colour printing at the Atelier 17 under notorious master printer William Hayter. In 1994 she trained with American printmaker Dan Welden who initiated the non-toxic printmaking technique called Solar Plate Etching. Since then, Seraphina has developed this process in Australia and in her own art practice. She has taught printmaking at Meadowbank Tafe, Hornsby Tafe, and Penrith Tafe. She regularly teaches Solar Plate at Megalo print Studio, Canberra and summer schools at Camp Creative in Bellingen.

Seraphina is a mentor to artists with a disability and teaches them printmaking at the Addison road centre, Marrickville. Most recently she traveled to India to take up an Artist in Residency at the Government School of Art in Calcutta. There she taught solar plate etching as well as at the Kola Bhavan University in Shantineketan, West Bengal. Seraphina has had many solo and group exhibitions of her work and is represented in many public and private spaces in Australia and Overseas.


List of materials required to bring:

- Apron 

- Enclosed shoes

- A Small box of disposable rubber gloves from the supermarket

- Bring a variety of images with line, texture and tone as inspiration for your art work + ideas to work from

- Bring at least 3 images on A4 Acetates (clear film)

- Pencils, Gouache Paint, Pens

- Paper: 2 sheets of Stonehenge, quality etching paper 250 gsm

- A3 folder + tissue paper, to take your prints home

All other materials (aluminium plates, copper sulphate, varnishes & inks) are covered in the material fee.
