Spend a truly unique weekend in Mudgee with casting superstar, Claire Tennant, and explore the art of studying and sculpting the human head. During this creative and fun two-day master class you’ll learn all the tricks of the trade needed to create a cast mould of your head, taking home a few new friends and a statement piece to admire for years.
During this hands-on 3-day workshop, participants will learn the 3 stages of sculpture production: Sculpting, mould making and casting. Participants will learn the skills to accurately sculpt a human head, to create a mould and cast a head sculpture. Initially you’ll study the human form and mould making techniques. To follow, you’ll create a life-sized human head sculpture modelled in clay, and then use your creations to produce a high quality and beautifully textured plaster or cement head sculpture. This workshop has been carefully curated to ensure the experience is a truly unique and immersive one, one that challenges convention and leaves you feeling inspired to push yourself creatively.
Day 1: Create a life-like human head sculpture from clay using your hands and tools supplied or brought from home. This workshop will focus on the benefits of building an armature to support your work, specific facial features and proportions, and relevant texture applications.
Day 2: Equip yourself with mould making skills for sculpture. Today you’ll create a waste mould from Agenate with a 2-part plaster casing. You’ll also learn about appropriate part lines and the importance of considering undercuts and other common traps.
Day 3: On day three you’ll arrive bright and early to open your mould and pour your cast in plaster of Paris or concrete. You’ll discuss the best casting procedures and how to fix any problems in the cast once it is out of the mould.
While our casts are curing, participants will enjoy a magnificent lunch for the last time at Rosby, and discuss finishing techniques and surface applications. Once your cast is cured, you will open the moulds and work on the detailing.
