During this 3-day workshop you’ll cover the three stages of sculpture production: sculpting, mould making and casting. You’ll study the human form and mould-making techniques before creating a life-sized human head sculpture modelled in clay, which you’ll use to create a plaster or cement head sculpture. By the end, you’ll be equipped with the skills to sculpt a human head, create a mould and cast a head sculpture.
Day 1: Create a life-like human head sculpture from clay using your hands and tools supplied or brought from home. This workshop will focus on the benefits of building an armature to support your work, specific facial features and proportions, and relevant texture applications.
Day 2: On the second day you will learn the skill of mould making for sculpture. You’ll create a waste mould from Agenate with a 2-part plaster casing and then learn about appropriate part lines and the importance of considering undercuts and other common traps.
Day 3: On day three you will arrive bright and early to open your mould and pour your cast in plaster of Paris or concrete. Together we will discuss the best casting procedures and how to fix any problems in the cast once it’s out of the mould.
While your cast is curing, you’ll share a magnificent lunch with your peers for the last time at Rosby and discuss finishing techniques and surface applications. Once your cast is cured, we’ll open the moulds and work on detailing.
