A place for sport, social gatherings, and local spirit. There’s always a reason to stop by The Rylstone Club.
Rylstone, located a scenic 3-hour drive from Sydney and just 40 minutes from Mudgee, is one of the oldest towns west of the Great Diving Range. From heritage sandstone buildings to the 1875 Highfield Cottage – one of the earliest built in Rylstone – this heritage town oozes history at every turn. And at the centre of its story lies The Rylstone Club, a community hub of connection, camaraderie and a good dose of country hospitality.
The Rylstone Club started with a big idea and a lot of determination. After World War II, returned servicemen dreamed of a space they could call their own. Jack W. Tindale, a founding member and President for over three decades, led the charge. With wool donations, a little fundraising creativity, and a lot of elbow grease, they transformed a butcher’s shop into the first clubroom.
By 1960, they’d outgrown their humble beginnings, moving to a new purpose-built clubhouse with a bowling green and, eventually, squash courts and a dining room. Over the years, the Rylstone Club has grown into a central hub for the community, built on the same spirit of camaraderie and resilience that started it all.
When it comes to activities, The Rylstone Club punches above its weight. Whether you're a seasoned player or a curious first-timer, the club’s lawn bowls space is welcoming and relaxed, hosting weekly mixed bowls sessions and friendly competitions. Never played? Don’t sweat. There’s always someone to show you the ropes.
For those craving fast-paced action, the club’s two squash courts are open daily for social games (except during competition times). Or if a peaceful round of golf is more your speed, The Rylstone Club’s 12-hole sand green course is both affordable and fun, at just $3.30 per round.
It’s not just about sports, though. From Friday morning bingo to the ever-popular Friday night raffles, you’ll find a steady stream of events to keep you entertained. For those evenings that you’d prefer to leave the car at home, hop aboard The Rylstone Club’s courtesy bus, running every Wednesday and Friday evening.
Of course, you can’t have fun and games without food. The Rylstone Club’s bistro serves up classic pub favourites six days a week, catering to appetites big and small. Think classic chicken parmigiana, juicy lamb cutlets, and a crowd-pleasing seafood basket. Dine in to soak up the atmosphere or grab your meal to go.
Stay and play at Carwell Cottage
The Rylstone Club welcomes all, and not just for the day. If you’re looking to extend your time in Rylstone (we recommend doing so, with plenty to explore), the self-contained Carwell Cottage makes a peaceful group stay.
Set on a peaceful block overlooking Sammy’s Flat, this 1929 cottage features five bedrooms, two bathrooms (including accessible facilities), a fully equipped kitchen, and ducted air conditioning to keep you comfortable year-round. Wake up to the sound of native wildlife and enjoy the convenience of having the club’s facilities right on your doorstep.
Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a foodie, or just looking for a place to relax and connect with locals, The Rylstone Club offers a little slice of country hospitality.
