Blending the character of Australian wines with old-world finesse, Logan Wines has redefined winemaking and the premium cellar door experience.
Driving into Mudgee along Castlereagh Highway, it’s nearly impossible to miss Logan Wines’ Tasting Room in its stately position atop a hill; the timeless, contemporary glass facade a striking statement against the lush green landscape. Just like its winemaker, Peter Logan, this cellar door thrives on stepping outside the box.
“The same old thing. There’s plenty of that. Why make more?” Peter says. From the moment he planted his roots in the then-unfamiliar NSW Central Ranges, Peter has spent 28 years rewriting the rules of Australian winemaking.
"The same old thing - there's plenty of that. Why make more?".
As you’ll guess from the outside, Logan Wines’ cellar door isn’t your typical tasting room – it’s one with numerous accolades, including the prestigious Australian Gourmet Traveller Cellar Door of the Year award.
Designed by architect Stephen Buzacott, this modern space will entice you to pull your camera out from the moment you arrive. It feels like a breath of fresh air, with warm-coloured wooden tables, white chairs and floor-to-ceiling windows that bring the outdoors in. Soak in the sweeping views of the Apple Tree Flat vineyard, a small blue lake, and the mighty Mount Knowles. Bright and airy, the space flows into an outdoor deck lined with chic yellow-and-white umbrellas and plenty of seating.
The bar’s white marble top emanates sophistication, while twin fireplaces (indoor and outdoor) keep the vibe warm and welcoming year-round. “We wanted to create something timeless but relevant,” says Peter Logan. “The building reflects our ethos: sustainability, beauty, and a respect for the natural surroundings.”
On arrival, you’ll be greeted with Logan’s Vintage 'M' Cuvée, setting the tone for what’s to come: your choice of four curated wine flights that showcase the winemaker’s bold approach.
“When I started out, I wanted to make wine that I liked to drink. I wanted it to excite me, not cater to a demographic”.
Peter Logan didn’t set out to follow the status quo; he built his reputation by deliberately challenging it. “When I started out, I wanted to make wine that I liked to drink. I wanted it to excite me, not cater to a demographic,” Peter explains.
Inspired by the rich, fruity character of Australian wines and the balance and structure of old-world styles, Peter’s winemaking philosophy bridges the best of both worlds. His experiments began early, planting varietals like tempranillo and making pinot gris and gewürztraminer when few others dared. Over time, his maverick tendencies evolved into his own style: fermenting white grapes on their skins, embracing wild yeasts, and even putting wine in kegs.
In 2024, Logan Wines released the limited-edition Logan Lab range collection; a celebration of Peter’s love for experimentation. Each year the collection changes, featuring his recent creative trials while showcasing unconventional varietals and winemaking techniques.
