Mudgee’s Getaway Cottages have been crafting a sanctuary for travellers for over three decades, and their charm hasn’t waned a bit. Whether you're seeking a family retreat or a mid-week escape, these cottages offer a rare combination of seclusion, history, and nature, all just a short stroll from the heart of Mudgee. What began as a simple vision has blossomed into a beloved retreat where memories are made, gardens are explored, and historic character shines through.

“What I have created has taken me some 30 years to bring to fruition,” says owner Elizabeth Etherington, “however, the original goal came from a very simple idea: to provide a whole home for visitors to stay – a home they had exclusive use of (not sharing with strangers) – and a backyard where old memories can be reignited, and new memories made to take back home.”

With six unique cottages sprawled across nine acres of private riverfront parkland, this property offers an experience unlike any other in Mudgee’s town centre. The cottages are perfect for every kind of getaway: midweek visitors can embrace the calm and slower pace of Mudgee, while weekenders can dive into the region’s vibrant social scene.

The first of its kind since 1996

Elizabeth’s journey began in 1996 with the opening of Getaway Cottage. “I wanted to provide alternate accommodation to a motel, caravan park, or a hosted B&B. A place where friends can sit in their PJs, share memories or a personal issue, sit around a dining table and solve life’s issues,” she explains.

This forward-thinking idea, offering an entire home rather than a shared space, was the first of its kind in Mudgee. Each cottage has its own story, too. The Farmhouse and adjoining Garden Cottage were originally a vet’s residence and surgery. Elington Manor, a stunning 1903 Federation home, was restored over seven years to retain its historical character using the existing footprint, materials and extensions previous occupants left behind.

“My aim with each cottage is to enhance its history without affecting its original character,” says Elizabeth. The result? Properties that feel warm, lived-in, and full of personality, from the rustic fireplaces to the timeless verandahs.

Meet the menagerie

Mudgee’s Getaway Cottages isn’t just about the homes. Guests are surrounded by manicured lawns, gardens bursting with flowers, peaceful picnic spots by the river and arguably the biggest drawcard, a menagerie! Kamahl the camel has become something of a celebrity, often posing for photos mid-carrot snack. Then there’s Miss Olivia, the curious ostrich, and a host of cuddly bunnies, guinea pigs and mice.

“The kids can walk freely through the gardens, pick vegetables, and taste things fresh,” Elizabeth says. With three large seasonal vegetable gardens, guests are encouraged to smell, taste, and pick ingredients for their meals – or even take seeds home for their own gardens.

Despite the property’s rural feel, Mudgee’s bustling main street is just two blocks away. Whether you’re looking for a quiet solo retreat, a romantic weekend, or a group gathering with room for 40, this property offers something special: a true home away from home, blending nature, history and warm hospitality.
