It’s not just travellers who fall for this scenic slice of the countryside. Mudgee invites you to love where you live, and The Property Shop is here to help you find it.
The first time I heard someone describe the Mudgee Region, a phrase stuck with me. “There’s just something about Mudgee”, my colleague said as their gaze drifted up towards our Sydney office ceiling, almost like they were dreaming of being there. It didn’t take me long to realise they were exactly right. There is something deeply special, unique and authentic about the region. Whether it’s the historic charm that’s woven throughout the town’s architecture, the tranquillity of being nestled by rolling hills, or the fact that almost every business is created out of pure passion – together, it’s created a place that leaves a long-lasting impression.
But it’s not just visitors who will tell you the same; many travellers fall so head over heels, that they decide to put down roots and call it home. That’s exactly what happened with James from The Property Shop. After years abroad and some time back in Sydney, James and his family sought a new adventure – and they found it in Mudgee.
If anything’s testament to the locals' love for Mudgee, it's The Property Shop’s slogan: ‘Love where you live’. Since its founding by Hugh Bateman in 1973, The Property Shop has been committed to being the Mudgee Region’s most respected and client-focused real estate agency. With over fifty years of experience in the local market, the team of more than twenty passionate locals is dedicated to helping others find their place in this charming part of New South Wales. ‘Love where you live’ is the core of what they do – supporting residents and newcomers in building a life they love in Mudgee.
James, a real estate agent at The Property Shop, shares his story of finding a home in Mudgee. "We moved here five years ago," he explains. His wife, who grew up on a sheep and cattle station near Coolah, knew the area well and together they have been coming to the region for many years. "We had been looking for a while to do something different," James says. "We wanted the next challenge and adventure." Despite some scepticism, moving during a severe drought and bushfire season while expecting their third child, James and his family knew they wanted the peace and opportunity the countryside offered.
For James, Mudgee’s charm lies in its strong sense of community. “In major towns and cities, it can feel like you're stuck in the rat race,” he reflects. “Whereas in Mudgee, people keep an eye out for each other and will more often than not help you out if you're in a pickle.”
When it comes to local activities, James and his family enjoy a mix of nature and community fun. “There are lots of things I like to do in Mudgee,” he says. Beyond the wineries and restaurants, he loves Friday night rugby with the Mudgee Wombats. “When we get spare time, we really enjoy going out fishing on the dam, exploring new areas, and even camping with the kids. There are wonderful nature walks to explore, and there’s always something new to do.”
On the weekends, James and his family might kick off with a Friday night rugby game for his son, followed by Saturday soccer matches while James handles open homes or private inspections. "Once work is done, we often have children's birthday parties or head back home to the farm," he adds. Sundays are cherished family time, spent together on their olive grove, preparing for the upcoming week.
James's advice for anyone considering a move to Mudgee? “Do it, but make sure you do it wholeheartedly. Get involved in the community, and it will give back in return.” At The Property Shop, this spirit of community and love for the region is woven into everything they do.
For those looking for a fresh start, a slower pace, or just a place to breathe, Mudgee offers a community that welcomes you to love where you live, and The Property Shop is here to help you find it.
