From nourishing home-cooked meals and show-stopping cakes to unforgettable event spreads, Mudgee Catering Co. serves heartfelt dishes crafted with the region’s finest ingredients.
For over 16 years, Rachael McCarthy has been at the forefront of Mudgee’s catering scene, turning her passion for great food into Mudgee Catering Co. Today, her business is the go-to for weddings, corporate functions, and private events, all while championing local ingredients and heartfelt hospitality. Meet the master chef (and mind) behind one of the region’s most beloved catering companies.
Rachael’s cooking career began with cutting her teeth at prestigious Sydney spots including the Balmain Bug, The Boathouse at Blackwattle Bay, Simone Logue’s and The Wharf. Her journey from Sydney to Mudgee wasn’t exactly planned, but it was time for her to leave the ‘rat race’ behind.
‘I never saw myself as a country girl. I was terrified of the bush!’ she admits, recalling how she used to walk her dog in gumboots to ward off snakes when she first moved to the region. But 23 years ago, she made the big swap from city life to the rolling hills of Mudgee.
‘The community here is amazing. It’s been so supportive of me and my business,’ she says. From working at her mum’s café to establishing her own catering company, Rachael has thrived thanks to the region’s sense of connection and community.
The community love goes both ways for Rachael, who supports the entire region. Her team caters to everyone, from big weddings to corporate parties and workers' lunches. ‘In a small town, everything you do matters,’ she reflects. ‘Just because you’re cooking simple workers’ food today doesn’t mean you won’t be catering someone’s wedding down the track.’
The company’s private event space, nestled in the countryside, adds another layer to Mudgee Catering Co.’s offering. It’s a versatile venue that can host up to 200 standing guests or 90 seated – ideal for everything from intimate dinners to grand celebrations.
Rachael’s menus are a love letter to the region, leaning heavily on local ingredients. ‘I love using a lot of local Mudgee wine in our food,’ as well as oils from Rylstone Olive Press, beautiful honey, fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables from cottage gardens and cheese from local High Valley Cheese Co. When asked about her favourite dish to make, Rachael fondly recalls her Mudgee honey panna cotta. ‘That’s really yummy and I've been doing that for over 20 years.’
Beyond event catering, Mudgee Catering Co. has an online shop that brings the flavours of Mudgee to your table. Shop for everything from artisanal cakes to wholesome ready-to-eat meals and an array of local artisan treats. Orders are available for pickup or delivery, making it easier than ever to enjoy gourmet catering at home.
Rachael’s philosophy is simple: ‘Providing good food to customers from all walks of life. That's what it’s all about.’
