Mudgee’s wine region has a laid-back gem in Petersons of Mudgee. Here, the atmosphere is all about enjoying the moment, with great wines, laughs, and zero pretension. This family-friendly vineyard sits within the Petersons Wines group, with cellar doors in the Hunter Valley, in Armidale, and Mudgee’s very own locale.

Petersons is all about charm, character, and outstanding boutique wines. While its Hunter Valley locations are deep-rooted in the heart of Australian winemaking, the 160-acre Mudgee vineyard has been the backbone, supplying a vast amount of grapes of over 25 varieties for the group.

In Mudgee style, they’re also known to take things a little slower (excluding the service, of course). Here, you’ll find an unhurried wine-tasting experience, set to your expectations. Whether you’re looking for detailed wine notes, a laugh with the maker, or to be left in peace – the only things set in stone are the exceptional wines, stunning views and friendly team.

Meet Jamie

Petersons 5

Jamie, who leads the lovely Petersons of Mudgee team, infuses his laid-back character into the vineyard and cellar door. When he first established Petersons of Mudgee in 1996, Jamie’s goal was simple: create great wine and make sure everyone enjoyed it. As he puts it, “Yes, I run everything. I moved from the Hunter Valley and established the vineyard”. He goes on to joke, “The staff help look after it day-to-day, but everything’s my fault”.

With a down-to-earth attitude, Jamie believes in savouring life as much as the wine he pours. “Come here and we’ll show you the great wines we are renowned for . It’s all about the customer,” he says, describing the cellar door’s people-first approach.

“We’re not here to chase fame anymore. We’re proud of what we do, and we’ve been doing it for years,” Jamie explains. Petersons of Mudgee isn’t one to follow trends or chase awards; they’re here to make quality wine for people who love to drink it.

The cellar door experience

Petersons 1

Petersons’ cellar door is arguably one of the prettiest in the region. The cellar door feels homely, intimate and relaxing, like visiting a quaint cottage nestled in the heart of Mudgee’s wine country. Pull up a chair on the verandah overlooking a leafy green setting and in spring, pink cherry blossoms. Or in winter, get cosy indoors. Wine tastings are a laid-back affair here , you can sample a variety of the vineyard’s rich reds, vibrant whites, rosés and sparkling wines. Jamie and his team emphasise consistency and quality across all varietals, so don’t expect to be limited to just one or two highlights.

Jamie explains that the wines at Petersons aren’t designed to be specifically paired with food ,they are wines to be enjoyed for who they are just like good friends . For Jamie, good wine goes best with a comfortable chair just sit back and enjoy, plain and simple. "We don’t need to be the same. We’re allowed to be individual, and that’s where we’re at," he says, capturing the spirit of Petersons of Mudgee perfectly.
