The story of Wilgowrah Escapes

Wilgowrah dates back to the early 1800s, when explorers William Lawson, Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth ventured across the Blue Mountains, eventually discovering the fertile lands of Mudgee. Captivated by the Cudgegong River and the rolling landscape of the region, Lawson laid claim to vast tracts of land, including what would become Wilgowrah.

Fast forward to today, and the 480-acre property is now owned by Mudgee farmers Rick and Steph Gordon. They’ve transformed Wilgowrah into a destination recognised across all corners of Australia, with the standout Gawthorne’s Hut. This purpose-built retreat won the 2021 Airbnb award for Best Unique Stay and earned a spot among the world’s top 10 most desirable Airbnbs in 2023.

Loved for its: Isolation, peace and unique architecture

Named after one of the early tenant farmers on Wilgowrah, Gawthorne’s Hut is an off-grid, eco-friendly retreat designed by award-winning Mudgee architect Cameron Anderson and Steph and Rick’s son, Oliver.

Every element of Gawthorne’s Hut speaks to the essence of the region. The floor-to-ceiling windows capture sweeping views of Mudgee’s rolling hills, ensuring that nature is always in sight. Recycled bricks from the original Gawthorne’s Hut infuse the space with a sense of history, while bespoke furniture by Wild Willow Timber Designs adds a handcrafted touch that feels distinctly Mudgee.

Outside, you can toast to the sunset while the firepit crackles beneath Mudgee’s expansive, star-filled skies. Every detail of Gawthorne’s Hut has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the natural beauty and rich heritage of Mudgee, creating a retreat that’s as unique as the land it sits upon.

Built in the early 1920s as a place of worship, this heritage-listed church was deconsecrated in the 1950s and stood dormant until Rick and Steph saw its potential in 2020. These days, it’s a luxury escape with a difference.
