Mudgee’s love of beer goes back to the 18th century. Though the region is synonymous with wine, it certainly knows a thing or two about crafting great brews – and has done so since 1853. Get a good taste of Mudgee’s brewing legacy at Mudgee Brewing Co., where you’ll find quality locally crafted beers and more.

Housed in a century-old wool store, Mudgee Brewing Co. is a living, breathing slice of local heritage. "The Woolstore at 4 Church Street is an iconic building," the General Manager, Bryn Tustin explains. "Originally built for the wool trade, it’s now a laid-back venue that blends history with hospitality. Think exposed brick, timber beams, and plenty of character."

And then there’s the beer. The star of the show is the iconic Mudgee Mud, a nod to the town’s 1850s brewing heritage. "The Mudgee Mud beer has a fascinating history," says Bryn. "Originally brewed by the Federal Brewing Company, it earned its nickname from the murky river water used in the brewing process. After the brewery closed in the 1950s, the beer wasn’t brewed for about 60 years."

In the early 2000s, Mudgee Brewing Co. revived the legend with a modern twist: creating a rich imperial stout with notes of coffee and chocolate. For something a little lighter, Bryn suggests the Mudgee Summer Ale. "I love all our beers, but it’s hard to go past the Mudgee Summer Ale on a hot day!".

Drop into the brewery and you’ll find that sticking around is easy. If not for the beers and food, then for the lineup of events held across the week. Find your competitive streak at Wednesday’s trivia nights, dance to live music on Fridays and Sundays, and make the most of the bar’s cocktail specials and happy hour sessions.

"I perceive us as a 'more than beer' brewery venue," says Bryn. "Obviously, beer is the core of what we do, but we are also passionate about wine, cocktails, food, live music, and friendly service." On the drinks menu, you’ll find exclusively Mudgee wineries, guest taps from nearby breweries, and spirits from the renowned Mudgee-based Baker Williams Distillery.
