Southern Sky Astrophotography 2024 – Australia’s premier celebration of celestial photography – is landing at Kandos Museum from Wednesday 11th March 2026 showcasing the evocative winners of the 21st annaual David Malin Awards.
From luminous star trails over iconic landmarks to hauntingly beautiful deep sky nebulae, this stunning touring exhibition brings together 22 award-winning photographs that blend science, art and imagination.
The annual David Malin Awards are a highlight of the astronomical calendar, selected by world-renowned astrophotographer Dr David Malin AM and supported by Powerhouse and CSIRO Space and Astronomy.
Run by Central West Astronomical Society in Parkes NSW, this year’s theme Working with Light in the Night, challenged photographers to contrast the glow of Earth’s artificial lights with the beauty of the night sky.
Ed Hurst’s image ‘Kaleidoscope’ won the 2024 theme’s category, depicting Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge illuminated by the lights of the Vivid Festival. Hurst’s image captured the artificial lights of Sydney Harbour seamlessly blending into the night sky’s natural star trails.
Working with Light in the Night is one of nine submission categories, which also include Wide-Field, Deep Sky, Nightscapes, Solar System, Smartphone Photography, Animated Sequences and Photo Editor’s Choice.
The David Malin Awards are held annually at the Central West Astronomical Society for AstroFest, Parkes, NSW. Their exhibition remains on display at the CSIRO Parkes
